Canons and Neglected Gems

I’ve arrived at a tentative list of the films that I am most interested in exploring. It’s strict: nothing before 1929 or after 1945. It’s also fluid — I expect to discover different films that I have ignored or underestimated, and others on the list that turn out to be less interesting than I initially thought. The films included in the “canon” are there because they are the ones that film historians have considered most worth writing about. Some of them I don’t really care for, but many people do. I’ve probably forgotten about some films that should be on the list — possibly because I really don’t care for them. Some of the “neglected gems” may not appear so neglected, except in the ways that I find interesting. Some famous films are unavailable for viewing, still locked in studio vaults and haven’t been seen for many years. The list is in alphabetical order, not rankings.
